reMarkable Sync is now in the official Obsidian community marketplace

Two clicks, no manual files, automatic updates. Our reMarkable → Obsidian plugin just got a lot easier to install.

reMarkable Sync — the free, open-source plugin that brings your reMarkable Paper Pro documents into Obsidian as high-fidelity PDFs — has been accepted into the official Obsidian community plugin marketplace. It’s no longer a manual, download-the-zip affair: you can now install it from inside Obsidian in a couple of clicks, and updates arrive automatically.

TL;DR — Open Obsidian → Settings → Community plugins → Browse, search “reMarkable Sync”, hit Install, then Enable. That’s it.

Why being in the marketplace matters

Until now, installing reMarkable Sync meant grabbing a release zip from GitHub, extracting it, and dropping the folder into your vault’s hidden .obsidian/plugins/ directory. It worked, but it was fiddly — and every update meant doing it again.

  • Two-click install — browse, install, enable, all without leaving Obsidian.
  • Automatic updates — new releases show up in Obsidian’s update list; no more re-downloading zips.
  • Reviewed & vetted — community plugins go through Obsidian’s submission review before listing.
  • Discoverable — anyone searching the plugin browser for “reMarkable” can now find it.

How to install it now

  1. Open Obsidian on desktop (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  2. Go to Settings → Community plugins and, if needed, turn off Restricted Mode.
  3. Click Browse and search for reMarkable Sync.
  4. Hit Install, then Enable.
  5. Open the plugin settings and authenticate with your reMarkable account to start syncing.
Prefer the manual route, or pinning a specific version? The release zips are still on GitHub, and the old install steps still work.

A quick refresher on what it does

reMarkable Sync connects directly to the reMarkable Cloud API and renders your documents as pixel-faithful PDFs inside your vault — preserving the look of your actual handwriting rather than a flat screenshot.

  • High-fidelity rendering — all 9 pen types with calibrated colors, widths, and opacity.
  • Full color & layers — 14 colors including shader and highlighter, with layer ordering preserved.
  • Text styles — headings, bold, bullets, checkboxes, and numbered lists.
  • Incremental & auto-sync — only changed documents download, on a configurable interval.
  • Annotated PDFs — merges your annotations onto the original PDF background.

Still free, still open source

Nothing about the model changes. reMarkable Sync remains completely free under the GPL-3.0 license — no premium tiers, no subscriptions. The full source lives on GitHub, and if it saves you time you can buy the developer a coffee. It’s a desktop-only plugin, since it needs local file access and direct API communication.
